Q&A with photographer Ryan Flynn

April 8, 2014

Ryan Flynn from Ryan Flynn Photography (natch) is one of our favorite local photographers. We caught up with him recently to find out some pro tips on the sometimes tricky process of finding the right photographer to capture your special day. Check out his tips and some of his gorgeous photography below:

What is your top tip for hiring the right photographer? Find someone whose photos you really connect with, and then find out if you connect with them as a person. You’ll spend a lot of time together on the wedding day, so it’s important to really click with not just their work, but them. Finding someone whose work you really love and are moved by, and can envision yourself in, gives you room to trust your photographer to do what they do best. The best images really come from a place of collaboration and sharing a vision.

What are your must-shoot photos for any event? Every wedding is different. There are commonalities, for sure, but you have to let each wedding – and each couple – be what, and who, they are. To that end, my “must haves” are the moments and emotions that connect the bride and groom to everyone they care about at the wedding. I truly love the portraits of the bride and groom, as well. It’s great to be able to find a few moments for them to just be together and make some awesome photos.

When should brides and grooms select their photographer? The sooner the better! It might sound cliche, but it’s true. There are only so many weddings we can physically photograph each year, and things tend to book quickly. If you find someone whose images you can’t live without, lock them down as soon as you have a date!

Give us a quick “day in the life”:

In this industry every day is different, which makes it fun! We are constantly looking for inspiration so I could be in the office coming up with new design ideas to create the perfect personalized experience for our clients. My favorite part of the day is in production. It’s amazing to see an events vision take shape and come to life in this romantic fairy tale sort of fashion.

How did you begin your career in event design?

It was kind of an accident. I was a Recreation & Tourism major in college and had a background in Food & Beverage. I hadn’t found my niche yet and here was this career opportunity that wrapped all of my passions into one position.  I was enthralled in learning everything I could about event and floral design. It is pretty special to be given the opportunity to bring someone’s dream to life.

What do you love about working at the Herban Design Studio?

I love being able to create something original and exciting and memorable. I love weddings because every bride and groom has their own story and we get to create a true experience for their guests based on all the things that are special to them as a couple.

What are your favorite event design trends for 2014?

My favorite themes right now are actually new twists on old favorites. I will always love the vintage look. There is something incredibly romantic about adding old world charm to today’s modern lifestyle.

Thanks Chelsea, for being an amazing part of our team!

Award-winning Catering: 3 Reasons to Host Your Event during Warm Weather Months

For every season we have our favorite things about hosting a special event or celebration. In the coziness of winter, we love crafting warm cocktails and deliciously rich dishes. But now, albeit only February, we’re excited to focus on the bright, fresh flavors of spring and summer that showcase ingredients grown in our backyards.  We think you’re going to be excited too when you see our new Spring and Summer menus.

Here are three reasons we think you’ll want to throw a party this summer!

1. Asparagus!!!! Found in our savory asparagus, gruyere, goat cheese, and chives tartlet.

2. Berries. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries like those featured in our Farmer’s Market Summer Salad with fresh berries, goat cheese, candied almonds & strawberry-basil vinaigrette.

3. Beets. The star of our Red and Golden Beet Tartare with red and gold beets, Cabrales blue cheese, almond dust

Seattle’s Quintessential Event Venue Transports You to The City of Lights!

November 28, 2013

Twice a year we host themed open house events to showcase our delicious new seasonal menus, the distinct beauty and functionality of our Seattle venues, and décor and floral inspiration from our Herban Design Studio. We feature our vendor partners and invite clients, friends, family, and peers for a party that kicks off the new season of celebrating.

This September, our Parisian-inspired Sodo Park open house transported guests to the City of Lights with romantic décor, delectable hors d’oeuvres, and a classic French cocktail.

The movie Moulin Rouge was projected on the wall inside the venue, Kir Royales were served at the bar, and French music perfumed the air.

Our Herban Design Studio team led by Nicole Haynes transformed the space. We adored the simple, yet stately elegance of her beautiful gold and ivory tabletops.

Themed food stations, such as the The Salon, Boom Boom Room, and a French Cafe were located throughout venue, offering guests the opportunity to try favorites from our 2013 fall/winter menus, including seared beef loin canapés, our signature sweet potato crab cakes, port poached fig tartlets, pumpkin and goat cheese rice fritters, and more.

Guests satisfied their sweet tooth at The Boulangerie, topping off the evening by nibbling on Palmiers and our ever popular house made “Ding Dongs”.

It was tres magnifique!

Working with an award-winning Seattle catering company: Q & A with our intern Darby

October 14, 2013

We are so happy to introduce you to Herban Feast’s intern, Darby! She came to us two months ago after graduating from Gonzaga University with a BA in business administration, and was eager to gain experience with a successful catering and events company.  Wonder what it’s like to be our intern? Find out in this fun Q&A with Darby about her internship experience so far!

Give us a quick “day in the life”

I arrive at 8:30 a.m. to go over the itinerary for the day with the Sales Team. The rest of the day consists of updating binders, creating menus, placing rental orders and designing floor plans for upcoming events.  At times, I also conduct site visits with a member of our sales team, or visit a vendors business to look at inventory, or pick up rentals. Some days, I work the events to get a feel for how events are executed after the planning is done. Every day is different, which means there is never a dull moment.

What has been your favorite event that you’ve seen or worked on while being part of the Herban Feast team? Why?

The Sodo Park and The Foundry Open Houses. The design was fantastic, and the food was phenomenal for both events. With The Foundry Open House, I had the opportunity to see this event from the idea conception to the actual execution. I know our guests were excited about their event once they stepped through the doors and saw what our sales and design team is capable of creating.

What are the three most important things you’ve learned in your position?

First and foremost, be flexible. As an intern, I am exposed to the many components that make up a successful catering and events company. I get to see different venues, work different events and learn from different people all the time. Every day is different — which I love — but flexibility is key.

Coming into this position, I knew attention to detail was a must, but I didn’t realize why until being a part of the Herban Feast team. There is a ripple effect; when one thing is missed, it can cause serious stress on someone else later on.

Lastly, change can be exciting. I came on in the middle of wedding season, with little background in catering and event coordinating. It was a bit overwhelming in the beginning, but looking back, it’s been exciting. I’ve learned so much in the last two months, and I have the Herban Feast team to thank for that.
Thanks Darby, for being an amazing part of our team!

Thank YOU for making us a Best of Bride Winner Again!

July 17, 2013

We can’t remember the exact moment we found out that we’d won Seattle Bride’s “Best of Bride” Awardin five different categories because it’s very possible we completely lost consciousness.

But we did, and we are more grateful than we could ever convey in one little blog post.

Thank you to all of the brides, clients, partners, friends and family who voted for us, helping us win these amazing accolades:

  • All-Around Best Wedding Vendor
  • Best Caterer
  • Best Quintessential Seattle-Area Reception Site: Sodo Park
  • Best Place for a Large Gala Wedding (200+): Sodo Park
  • And, Best Repurposed Venue for our newest venue, The Foundry

We are grateful for your support and humbled by this experience.

Thank you again from the very bottom of our hearts.

xoxo The entire Herban Feast staff
