Ryan Flynn from Ryan Flynn Photography (natch) is one of our favorite local photographers. We caught up with him recently to find out some pro tips on the sometimes tricky process of finding the right photographer to capture your special day. Check out his tips and some of his gorgeous photography below:
What is your top tip for hiring the right photographer? Find someone whose photos you really connect with, and then find out if you connect with them as a person. You’ll spend a lot of time together on the wedding day, so it’s important to really click with not just their work, but them. Finding someone whose work you really love and are moved by, and can envision yourself in, gives you room to trust your photographer to do what they do best. The best images really come from a place of collaboration and sharing a vision.
What are your must-shoot photos for any event? Every wedding is different. There are commonalities, for sure, but you have to let each wedding – and each couple – be what, and who, they are. To that end, my “must haves” are the moments and emotions that connect the bride and groom to everyone they care about at the wedding. I truly love the portraits of the bride and groom, as well. It’s great to be able to find a few moments for them to just be together and make some awesome photos.
When should brides and grooms select their photographer? The sooner the better! It might sound cliche, but it’s true. There are only so many weddings we can physically photograph each year, and things tend to book quickly. If you find someone whose images you can’t live without, lock them down as soon as you have a date!
